Fully 72 percent of Americans believe Donald Trump should let the Russia probe come to completion, according to a new CBS News poll. But when it comes to passing legislation to ensure Robert Mueller can complete his work, only 52 percent support it.
That’s because even though 75 percent of Democrats and 53 percent of independents want Congress to pass “Protect Mueller” legislation, only 23 percent of Republicans support Congressional action.
However, support for Trump allowing Mueller to finish his work has strong bipartisan backing: 81 percent of Democrats, 76 percent of independents, and 57 percent of Republicans. Even so, a bare majority of Americans (51 percent) view the Russia investigation as politically motivated rather than justified (46 percent).
A plurality of Americans, 40 percent, say the midterm elections were a rejection of Trump’s policies, while 37 percent say they weren’t. And get this—14 percent say the midterms were an endorsement (!) of Trump’s policies (they must have retreated to their fact-free zones after hearing Trump declare near complete victory the day after Election Day).
The CBS poll put Trump’s job approval rating at his regularly dismal 39 percent, exactly the same as the poll’s finding last month. It’s a stubborn but consistently weak number.
