Comic-Con: Brie Larson Confirmed to Play Captain Marvel

The ‘Room’ actress will play a pilot who becomes part-alien following an accident.

It’s official: Brie Larson is reporting for duty as Marvel’s first leading lady, Captain Marvel.

The Room actress, who appeared in Comic-Con’s cavernous Hall H earlier on Saturday to promote Warner Bros.’ Kong: Skull Island, made an appearance during Marvel’s evening presentation to confirm reports from last month that she will play Carol Danvers in the 2019 movie, an Air Force pilot who gains powers after her DNA becomes fused with an alien after an accident.

Captain Marvel has had a meteoric rise as a comic property since a 2012 reinvention by writer Kelly Sue DeConnick, which saw Danvers (who had previously gone by the name “Ms. Marvel”) find new direction and new respect as a superhero and member of the Avengers. The relaunch inspired much fan devotion, which fueled demand for the character to become the star of Marvel’s first female-led movie.

The movie, which has a script by Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Nicole Perlman and Inside Out‘s Meg LeFauve, was originally announced with a July 2018 date, but was later shifted back to a March 8, 2019 release.

Larson tweeted the news herself shortly after the panel with a photo captioned, “Call me Captain Marvel.”
