12 Days of Pride: Transgender Trailblazer Marsha P. Johnson

For our final installment of 12 Days of Pride we had to honor Marsha P. Johnson. For the many people who are celebrating LGBT Pride Month, they should know Johnson’s legacy is exactly why you are able to celebrate.

Marsha P. Johnson was a drag performer and transgender woman who helped spark the 1969 Stonewall riots. In case you don’t know, Stonewall is an iconic moment in history where members of the LGBT community resisted against a police raid. Marsha P. Johnson is credited as one of the first people to fight back against the police during the riot.

Stonewall lead to what would eventually be known as the gay liberation movement, which began the official fight for LGBT rights in America. Although not acknowledged enough, Johnson is one of the founders of the LGBT movement.

Sadly, she was murdered in 1992 in New York, although police said it was a suicide, which has been disputed and disproven. Nonetheless, her iconic history cannot be forgotten. She was a warrior who resisted and had pride before there was an LGBT Pride Month.

Watch Shangela celebrate Marsha P. Johnson in the video above.
